The Difference Between Christian and Secular Leadership: Introduction

A few weeks ago, the international Salvation Army welcomed its new leaders – General Lyndon Buckingham, Commissioner Bronwyn Buckingham (World President of Women’s Organisations), Commissioner Edward Hill (The Chief of the Staff), and Commissioner Shelley Hill (World Secretary of Women’s Organisations) – at a worship meeting at Regent Hall in London. It was an inspiring afternoon.

I was particularly drawn to Commissioner Bronwyn’s prayer that we would be an Army that “holds being as high a priority as doing” and the General’s challenge that people should sense something different about us and want to know what it is, so that we can tell them, God compels us to be who we are and do what we do.

I have been wondering how all this impacts my leadership. Is there or should there be a difference between Christian and secular leadership? If so, what is it?

In today’s society, leadership is a highly valued trait. From businesses to organisations, effective leadership is seen as essential for success. However, there should be a significant difference between Christian and secular leadership. Christian leaders, such as pastors and those who work in ministry, should approach leadership differently as they strive to align their values with those of Jesus Christ.

The Difference Between Christian and Secular Leadership: Worldly Values vs Jesus’ Values

Secular businesses often prioritise power and success (usually in the form of profit) above all else. Their leadership strategies may involve manipulation, competition, and a focus on personal gain. In contrast, Christian leaders are called to follow Jesus’ example, which is rooted in love, humility, and service to others.

Jesus taught that the greatest among us should be the servant of all. Christian leaders like me should lead by serving their team members, showing compassion, and prioritising the well-being of others. They should seek to create an environment where everyone can grow and thrive, rather than simply striving for personal success.

The Difference Between Christian and Secular Leadership: The Role of Faith

A key difference between Christian and secular leadership is the role of faith. Christian leaders rely on their relationship with God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit to make decisions and lead their teams. They understand that their ultimate purpose is, as the General put it, to glorify God and serve his people.

This reliance on faith sets Christian leaders apart. It means we are not solely focused on achieving material success or personal gain. Instead, we are guided by a higher purpose and are motivated by a desire to bring glory to God through our leadership.

The Difference Between Christian and Secular Leadership: Leading with Grace

Christian leaders have the unique opportunity to lead with grace and forgiveness. Jesus taught the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation, and Christian leaders should embody these principles in their leadership.

Secular businesses may focus on punishment and retribution when mistakes are made, but Christian leaders should approach these situations with grace and a desire for restoration. They should seek to build a culture of forgiveness and support, allowing team members to learn from their mistakes and grow.

The Difference Between Christian and Secular Leadership: Conclusion

One other significant difference between Christian and secular leadership is in their values and approach. Christian leaders are called to lead with love, humility, and service, following the example of Jesus Christ. They rely on their faith, and lead with grace and forgiveness. By embracing these differences, Christian leaders can have a profound impact on their teams, organisations, and the world.

As we strive to maintain difference between Christian and secular leadership, my prayer for myself, and for you too, is that we would prioritise being over doing, and by doing so, we will be so different to the leaders of the world, that people will want to know why. Then we can tell them God’s love compels us, and introduce them to that love.
