Introduction: What Does Christian Stewardship Mean?
As Christians, we are called to be faithful stewards of the resources and blessings that God has entrusted to us. In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus tells the parable of the talents, illustrating the importance of using our time, talents, abilities, and money wisely for his kingdom. This parable serves as a powerful reminder that we are not owners, but rather stewards and caretakers of God’s blessings.
The Last Servant: A Self-Centered Mindset
In the parable, the last servant was given one talent, but instead of investing it, he buried it in the ground out of fear. When the master returned, the servant made excuses for his inaction, revealing a self-centered mindset. This servant was thinking only of himself, rather than considering the greater purpose and responsibility entrusted to him.
Similarly, we can fall into the trap of making excuses to avoid doing what God calls us to do. We may fear failure, lack confidence, or prioritise our own desires over God’s will. However, this parable reminds us that we must not let fear or self-centeredness hinder our obedience to God.
Christian Stewardship: A Call to Wholehearted Obedience
Christian stewardship means recognising that our time, talents, abilities, and money are not ours in the first place. We are merely caretakers of God’s blessings, and he expects us to use them wisely for his glory.
Just as the master in the parable expected his servants to invest and multiply the talents given to them, God expects us to faithfully use and develop the resources he has entrusted to us. Whether it is our skills, finances, or opportunities, we are called to be good stewards and make the most of what we have been given.
When we embrace the mindset of stewardship, we shift our focus from self-centeredness to wholehearted obedience. We recognise that our lives are not about our own desires and ambitions, but about serving God and others. This mindset enables us to make intentional choices that align with God’s will and prioritise his kingdom.
Conclusion
Christian stewardship is a call to faithfully manage the resources and blessings God has given us. Just as the last servant was judged for his self-centeredness, we must not make excuses to avoid doing what God calls us to do. Instead, we are called to embrace a mindset of stewardship and wholehearted obedience, recognising that everything we have is a gift from God. Let us use our time, talents, abilities, and money wisely, for his glory and the advancement of his kingdom.
