Summary

Jesus commands us to love God and to love others. You cannot command something that just happens. So love isn’t uncontrollable. It’s a choice. It’s a commitment.

Valentine’s Day is on its way!

Tuesday sees the annual commemoration of Valentine’s Day (gentlemen, you can thank me for the timely reminder!), a day when we celebrate romance and love, a day when people will send an anonymous card to the object of their love, or where couples will exchange cards and gifts. The cost of roses sky-rockets, and finding somewhere to dine out can become impossible!

Uncontrollable Love?

The way we talk about love makes it sound as though it’s something uncontrollable, something that just happens to us. “I just fell in love” makes it sound like we weren’t looking where we going and “woosh!” we found ourselves face down in the ditch of love! But Jesus commands us to love God and to love others. You cannot command something that just happens. So love isn’t uncontrollable. It’s a choice. It’s a commitment.

Love is a Choice

Love happens when we choose to do something for someone, even though they have done nothing to deserve it. Love happens when we choose to serve someone who is behaving in an unlovable way. Love happens when we choose to encourage rather than to criticise. Love happens in the hundreds of loving choices God gives us to make.

Life is full of choices. God encourages us to make good ones. Love is definitely one of the best choices we can make. It’s worth celebrating!

Moses encouraged God’s people to Choose Life. This week in Battle Drill devotionals, we explore what that means for us today.

There’s a new episode of Battle Drill Devotional every Monday through Friday.
