Today’s Battle Drill Devotional: You Can’t Hear God’s Voice if You’re Rushing Around

Read Luke 8:4-15. “I can’t talk now. I’m busy!” Have you ever said that to anyone? Has anyone said it to you? Many of us – me included, on occasions – say this to God all the time! We live life in the fast lane. We’re always in a hurry. We’re running from one activity to the next.

But God doesn’t want what’s left when we’ve done everything else. He wants to be at the centre of all we do. If we want to hear what God has to say, if we want him to direct our lives and our activities, then we must give him some time to listen. We must slow down. We must be quiet. We might even need to put it in our calendar!

Jesus speaks about the seeds that fell among the rocks. It begins to grow but the plant wilts and dies. Why? It can’t get enough water because it cannot grow deep roots. If you don’t take the time to reflect deeply on God’s word, then you will only ever have a superficial grasp of what God is saying to you. There will be no real change in your life.

How do you reflect deeply on God’s word and what he is saying to you? Two of the best ways are to have a daily quiet time with God – like this devotional – and to join a small group. Spending 10-15 minutes a day with your Bible gives you the opportunity to slow down and ask God what he wants to say to you from the passage you are reading. Joining a small group means you discuss what God is saying to you with other people and you can reflect on what he is saying to them too.

If we cultivate these habits, then we are signalling to God that we want to hear from him. How can you be intentional with the time you spend listening for God’s voice?

THINK IT OVER

What role does discussing God’s word, interacting, and learning from others play in your journey of faith?
