God Understands Your Pain

Today’s Battle Drill Devotional: God Understands Your Pain

The soldiers gave Jesus wine mixed with bitter gall, but when he had tasted it, he refused to drink it. (Matthew 27:34)

Read Matthew 27:32-44. Where do you go for advice? If you needed advice on your children, would you approach someone who has never been a parent? If you were in financial difficulty because you couldn’t make enough money to make ends meet, would you approach a millionaire for some advice? If you needed help in your garden, would you go to someone whose very fingers turn everything brown and lifeless? Probably not! Why? Because when we need help, we turn to someone we can trust. And a big part of that trust is their experience.

That’s why it was so necessary for God to come to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. He could have solved all the problems of the world with a wave of his hand. He could have obliterated our sins with a heavenly eraser. But God chose to experience our human condition with us. Jesus didn’t just appear, die for our sins, and then head back to heaven. He lived a whole human life. He experienced anger, weariness, sleepiness, hunger, grief, pain, and suffering. He even experienced death. Why? Because he wanted us to trust him. To trust that he has experienced all that we experience. He endured it all because he knew we would endure it all.

Jesus went through excruciating pain on the cross and eventually death to proclaim to you and me, “You can trust me”. We all need help from someone who is stronger than us. Jesus’ final message is that he is that person. You can trust him.

Think about the following:

If Herod had managed to kill Jesus in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:16) and was raised to life three days later, what questions might have been left unanswered?
