Enjoy the Good Things in Life

Today’s Battle Drill Devotional: Enjoy the Good Things in Life

Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! (Genesis 1:31a)

Read Genesis 1:1-2:3. Do you think God wants you to have fun? Unfortunately, for many of us, the way we have practised church over the years means we have come to see God as the fun police! Christianity seemed to be a list of don’ts. Don’t play sport. Don’t dance. Don’t go to the cinema. Don’t go to the pub.

But God looks at his creation and proclaims, “it was very good!” God delights over it all. He looks at us with a sense of joy, completion, wonder and play. Christians should never be “delight deficient!”

On Sabbaths God commands us to enjoy and delight in his creation and its many gifts. We take the opportunity to slow down. We can pay attention to our food and its aroma and taste. We can take time to see the beauty in nature – a tree, a flower, the beach, the sky. We can walk slowly and stop for unexpected conversations. We can gaze into the eyes of our dog!

Creation and life are God’s gift of a playground to us. Sport, dance, games, time with family and other leisure activities can nurture our sense of fun and help us observe Sabbath rest.

THINK IT OVER

Think about the following:

What do you find most fun to do? How do you think God feels about that activity?
